I love restoring cars but sometimes I have gotten in over my head and needed to call in reinforcements. That is the problem with an addiction like cars. It is very easy to bite off more than you can chew. I have some advice for those of you looking to get involved in a project like automobile restoration. There are as many reasons for restoring a car as there are cars out there and every reason is the right reason. Whether it is to recapture a bit of our youth, or just a deep love of cars in general we all get different senses of satisfaction from watching a car go through a metamorphosis.

Restoring cars can be very satisfying but it can be frustrating as well. The first thing to consider when getting involved in a car restoration project is to what level you want to be involved. This is a lesson I had to learn on my own and it was a hard one. Believe me. There is nothing worse than getting into a project and realizing you are in way over your head. The key is to try and keep your emotions in check. For me it was a 1976 BMW 2002 and it was in terrible shape. But, I got too involved in thinking how cool it was going to be when finished and lost sight of the fact that it was more than I was going to be able to handle. That car never got finished!

Another important lesson to restoring cars is to start with a good solid base. With my BMW there was rust on top of rust and the thing basically disintegrated. Unless you are skilled enough and have enough time to do a ground up restoration you should stay away. Only choose a car that is mostly there and has the possibility of being fully restored. Some cars were just meant to die a dignified death.

The most important lesson I can give anyone in restoring cars is to implore you to get lots of advice along the way. Check out chat rooms and blogs about restoration. The best advice comes from those people who have actually done a restoration job. They know the pitfalls and short cuts better than anyone. One thing is for sure. A fully restored car is a treasure and will bring you tons of joy.
